How to get an AI provider API key
AnswerSearch supports Anthropic / Claude and OpenAI. Choose a provider in AnswerSearch Settings and enter an API key from your own account with that provider. An API key is a private access code that lets AnswerSearch send requests on your behalf.
Treat your API key like a password. Do not share it publicly. AnswerSearch stores it locally on your computer, and your selected provider may charge you for API usage.
OpenAI
- Open OpenAI API Keys and sign in to your OpenAI Platform account.
- Set up API billing or credits if required for your account.
- Create a new secret key and copy it when it is shown.
- In AnswerSearch Settings, select OpenAI, paste the key into the OpenAI API key field, and click Save.
- Use a model available to your OpenAI API project. ChatGPT subscriptions and OpenAI API billing are managed separately.
For current setup details, see the OpenAI API quickstart.
Anthropic / Claude
- Open the Anthropic Console and sign in or create an account.
- Set up billing or credits if required for your account.
- Open API Keys and create a new key. Give it a recognizable name such as
AnswerSearch. - Copy the key when Anthropic shows it.
- In AnswerSearch Settings, select Anthropic / Claude, paste the key into the Anthropic API key field, and click Save.
Test your configuration
Open AnswerSearch and ask a simple question such as What is the capital of Canada? If AnswerSearch returns an answer, the provider configuration is working.
Troubleshooting
My key does not work
Check that the key was copied completely, there are no extra spaces, billing or credits are enabled with the selected provider, and the selected model is available to your provider account or project.
I lost or exposed my API key
Delete or revoke the key in your provider's console, create a replacement, and save the replacement in AnswerSearch Settings.
Security and privacy
AnswerSearch stores your API key locally on your computer. The browser page does not store your key, and the key is not saved in browser storage. The local AnswerSearch engine uses the key only to contact the provider you select.
